Bob Connolly
Bob Connolly spent his formative years at the Australian Broadcasting
Corporation, working as a foreign correspondent, current affairs reporter and
documentary film maker. In 1978 he teamed up with Robin Anderson and the pair
worked together for the next quarter century, producing a string of
internationally acclaimed documentaries until Robin’s untimely death in 2002.
First up was the“Highlands Trilogy”–“First Contact”,“Joe Leahy’s
Neighbors”and“Black Harvest”. Shot over ten years in the remote and war torn
Highlands of Papua New Guinea, these 3 films between them won 30 awards,
including an Academy Award nomination for First Contact.
Their next film–a study of Australian politics called“Rats in the
Ranks”–ran 5 months in Australian cinemas. Their last film was“Facing the
Music”, documenting the crisis in Australian universities.
Connolly published his first book–“The Fight for the Franklin”in 1982
and“First Contact”–New Guinea’s Highlanders Encounter the Outside World (with
Anderson) in 1987. His latest book,“Making Black Harvest”, has one several major
Australian literary awards. Connolly is working on his fourth book, a study of
documentary film making, centered on Rats in the Ranks. |
