　　圆明园，地处北京西郊，西方人称老颐和园，建于中华帝国的最后一个王朝，是中国有史以来最伟大、最美的园林。经过150年的精心修建，它成为“万园之园”。园内模仿中国其他地方的著名山水景色，搜集了来自帝国各地的珍宝和艺术品，建设了无数精致的宫殿建筑。

　　郎世宁，一位意大利传教士于1714年来到这里，成为中国皇帝的画师。他的日记不仅记录了他对圆明园的惊叹，也记录了皇帝家庭鲜为人知的生活。郎世宁不仅亲眼目睹了这个神奇的万园之园，他还看到了一个男人要如何艰辛地工作来统治庞大的中华帝国、皇帝怎样挑选与他共度良宵的妃子、甚至亲历了皇家成员模仿圆明园高墙外普通人生活的戏剧场景。

　　而后，一位叫麦吉的英国随军牧师跟随英法联军于1860年打到北京，经历了血腥的战斗。他亲眼目睹了圆明园这个无法替代的万园之园是如何被劫掠和摧毁的。

　　Yuan ming yuan，located in northwest suburb of Beijing city, known as Old Summer Palace, had been built during the period of the Last Dynasty of Chinese Empire. It was the greatest and most beautiful garden that China had ever known.

　　Giuseppe Castiglione, an Italian missionary, arrived in 1714. As the Chinese Emperor’s artist, his diary recorded not only the surprising for the garden but the mysterious life of the imperial family in the garden as well. He witnessed the wonders of this greatest of gardens and learned how difficult it was for a man to rule an immense Empire.

　　Then an English priest continued the story. Following the British-French expeditionary force, he arrived in Beijing during the bloody battles of 1860. The priest was shocked to see how easily a powerful Empire came to an end. He was witness to the looting and destruction of the irreplaceable garden of gardens.
